For a moment let’s talk about what “weird” means.
Maybe what I’m really trying to find in “weirdness” is more like “uniqueness”. When I travel, I don’t go to the malls, or the waterfalls, or the movies – I instead try to find the unique and interesting faces of a city or culture. What makes this place different than all other places.
There are still quite a few things in Austin that make it different than other cities.
But “weird” implies something more than just being unique. To me, weird means an added quirky side of something. Maybe like how a character from a Wes Anderson film is not normal. Or like a joke with a completely non-sequitur punchline.
Two muffins are baking in an oven. One turns to the other and says “Gee, it’s getting kind of hot in here, yeah?” and the other slowly turns around… look right into the blueberries of the former… and responds “HOLY SHIT! A TALKING MUFFIN!”
All the things listed on this site have creative minds behind them. Someone who decided “Oh yeah, it would be great to hot glue a bunch of chicken bones to a skateboard.”
Weird is creative.
Weird is inspiring.
Weird is hilarious.
Weird is surprising.
Life can always use more weirdness.
